Messy

Doing a lot of detailed matte painting at work. Needed to loosen up to give my brain a bit of a stretch. Yeah, yeah, so I was on Craig Mullins' site today.

Beautiful . . . is this photoshop, if so, what brushes are you using?

Thanks!
Jason - yup, Photoshop. Let's see...for this I had 3-4 brushes that I used. The most basic one was the default round brush (used that on most of the figure. You can even see the 'footprint' of that brush on the bright parts of her drapery). The rest is done with custom brushes. One of them basically spatters straight-ish lines in random directions (almost like individual strands of a haystack). I used that as a very broad lay in, which I then went over with a 'chalk' type brush (one of the defaults in the 'dry media' brushes) which I applied an organic texture to for a more natural feel.
Lastly, to get some real soft/lost edges, I used the 'smudge' tool a lot, but with the 'finger painting' option turned on, and 100% strength. I like that cause it lays down just a BIT of paint, and quickly degrades to simply smudging the paint that's already on the canvas. Sort of cuts down on the overly 'digital texture' feel of a lot of my custom brushes.
