Colour Keys

A personal assignment I gave myself: to come up with an environment and do a few different keys for it. I just wrapped up a television series at work, where I was one of three colour key guys. We didn't always have the time to explore different possibilities, so this was like therapy.

I like this post very much. It's so useful... It makes you think about the different moods you can communicate with illustrations and colours.

Ciao

Lovely enviroments.

I'm really stoked about your oil paintings. I'm ashamed to say I've never heard of Morgan Weistling until now. Thanks for the link and sharing your work.

Have you ever tried working with a regular gessoed canvas before with your oil paints? The added texture from the gesso could create a interesting amount of depth to your pieces unless you prefer a smooth surface.

I look forward to seeing more of your work, especially the oil paintings.

Marco! That looks just GORGEOUS. Though...what are colour keys and how do you go about them? *said the oh-no-sideways ex-ballerina, scratching her head* It looks like an exercise I could make myself do in future for values...

Thanks again folks!
Shuku - Colour Keys are typically used in animated filmmaking, to 'key' out the moods for different scenes, through colour. Sort of like how an animator has to feel out a character, a colour key artist needs to be able to feel the visual weight of colours and lighting in a scene. That's why I tried to do three distinctly different moods with this one.
Colour keys are generally no bigger than thumbnails, just to keep them quick and to the point. You definitely don't need detail to establish a mood. Try some for yourself - I find them to be awesome fun, and great excersize for the visual memory.
